WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Long Leaf Park in Wilmington, NC will be busier than normal Sunday, Feb. 18 with an event designed to be fun for the whole community.
It’s the inaugural NC Azalea Festival Seahawk Sun Run, a collaboration between the Festival and UNCW, just in time for homecoming weekend.
NC Azalea Festival Executive Director Alison Baringer stopped by WWAY News to talk with anchor Donna Gregory.
“I proudly serve on the UNCW Alumni Board of Directors”, Baringer explained, “and last year we were talking about some fun new events to bring to homecoming.”
“A 5K was mentioned, since UNCW used to do that,” she added. “A
nd I said we can bring our Sun Run to it, and kind of morphed it into homecoming weekend.”
The fundraiser is part of official homecoming activities.
100% of the registration fees will support the UNCW-NC Azalea Festival Fellowship in Volunteerism and Civic Engagement.
And since the event is dog-friendly, 50% of dog registration fees will support Paws4People.
Registration is available on line, or at the event starting at 8:30 a.m.
The 5K race starts at 10 a.m., and the 1.5 mile fun run/walk begins a few minutes later.
Awards will be announced at 11 a.m.
Parking is available at any legal space within Long Leaf Park.
